  • Issues Involved in Legalizing Gambling

    By vrao | June 8, 2008

Gambling along with so many negative social and religion issues is still being legalized and in the states where it is prohibited debates are going on to legalize it. The reason behind its legalization is the tax revenue gambling is bringing to the states. Legal gambling provides a significant amount of government revenue thus making the state authorities to legalize gambling in their states. Although legalized gambling comes with lots of issues such as increasing crime rate due to legally permitting people to gamble and loose/win money or anything that has some material value.

Legalized gambling not only increases crime rate but is also destructive to the families of the individuals playing. Another serious issue is addiction of gambling, many gamblers develop a habit of gambling and after sometime a need, this type of behavior is termed as pathological gambling. Legalized gambling helps people to get in more of this habit as it removes the fear of doing something illegal and tempts people to go for it. Addictive or compulsive gambling increases personal debts, drains the families of the pathological gambler financially and emotionally.

A desire to win brings along debts, frustration and destructive behavior, this may lead to various crimes. Even after all these issues around, gambling is becoming increasingly popular among the masses, much because people are unaware of the odds gambling brings along. A gambler must be fully aware of the odds gambling brings; it is not always that a person win. A bad day at gambling may prove hazardous. Moreover gambling providers leave no chances to exploit gamblers to make money.

This may happen that temporarily a gambler is ahead, making a lot of money and this would tempt him to play more and earn more but in the long run the odds prevail and gambler loses. Although legalizing gambling brings lot of money in form of tax revenues to the government but check against the increasing crime rates because of gambling is also one of the major concerns.

    Problem or Compulsive Gambling

    By vrao | June 5, 2008

It is a common human tendency to remember positive consequences of events rather than the bad ones they faced, unless and until really bad things happen. A similar thing happens in the case of lotteries. Hearing of a neighbor winning lots of money through a lottery ticket imparts a larger impact on our minds than hearing someone lost a lot of money in buying these tickets.

It is unusual to hear that someone winning a lottery and hence helping us to remember more of this unusual experience and reacting towards it by indulging yourself in buying the tickets. Most of these jackpots barely cover the costs incurred on playing or betting for them. A problem gambling arises from here, in dream of winning some day people get into habit of investing in lottery tickets; many of them are addicted of playing gambles at casinos and still others are into sports or other kinds of betting habitually. Knowing of these habits of people indulging into a luck game of making money, the gambling providers manipulate people’s beliefs about gambling in their own way to make money.

Casinos do not just offer different games; they make extensive research on the games they offer, measuring the chances of losing and winning of the gamblers coming at their casinos, balancing them according to the profit they desire to make and more importantly inducing a habit of gambling to let their business go on. The gambling providers make the gamblers feel that they aren’t losing money and if they are then it isn’t much. This induces a desire to win more through the event by playing more.

Even if you are failing progressively then what keeps you going for gambling is the next one could be a win and you’ll get all your money back, but this happens rarely. This pathological gambling finally results in economic and emotional loss for the player and his family.

Other types: A statement of a person can also be a bet for someone, happening of a particular event in this much time limit can be another form of betting. These kinds of betting may or may not involve much of a financial reason.

There are few games under gambling that are online, such as:

Problems, Odds and Beliefs in Gambling

    By vrao | May 24, 2008

In spite of many negative consequences gambling is very much popular. Most of the people who gamble are often aware of economic, social, religious and moral issues regarding gambling but still it never stops them from playing it. Other than these issues, there are few more issues that include misunderstandings related to gambling and amount of risks involved in it. Understanding these issues is very important. Starting with Odds; a gambler must know how bad the odds are relating to gambling event and how wisely to use them.

If gambling is your pastime then by learning the odds involved in the event you play, you’ll realize that it isn’t that bad. Odds mostly favor the house, in many cases it is like more you play more you loose. It explains how casinos take in lots of money including the events when it has to pay in case of losing against gamblers. Winning a hundred dollars before losing a hundred is a rare case. Odds for lotteries are much worse; companies earn a lot more from selling of lottery tickets to the individuals than giving away the prize money.

Chances of winning in lotteries are like one in a million cases. Even after knowing these odds and almost zero chances of winning in a lottery people are mistaken through few beliefs. They do not understand the principles of probability; the probability of winning and losing. They feel beating odds isn’t much of a problem if we keep going, calling it a system which according to them works some or the other day, their knowledge and experience will get them the fruit they desire some day.

A firm belief in what is called as ‘luck’ keeps them going. Unfortunately, many of the gambling games do not even work on the principles of luck, knowledge or experience. Even if you win in some gambling, you feel you can win ahead and hence leads you to invest more and more in betting/gambling. You rely on the past events of winning and think that future events will be the same, but this ends with you losing more than before.

    Gambling -an Overview

    By vrao | May 18, 2008

Gambling is generally associated with many negative social consequences and is also against many religions; hence either it is banned or heavily regulated in most of the countries. There are many issues raised against gambling that includes increasing crime rate, degradation of family and society. These issues are of much concern and thus many countries and religions are against its legalization.

Gambling is legal in United States of America under federal law; states here are free to regulate gambling. Las Vegas is one of the best examples. Lottery being another form of gambling is legalized by almost all the states. If you get into gambling you ought to think about the variables posed, there are three variables i.e. the initial stake, prediction, odds and terms agreed between the two parties.

The initial stake determines the scope of a bet. When it comes to predictability of the event, it depends upon the type of event: If the event is lottery or some kind of event that involves electronic or mechanical machines then prediction cannot be done but in case of horse racing, cricket or soccer matches then a person with a good knowledge can come out with some prediction that can help him in winning the bet. For the expected value or we can say the winning amount to be positive a gambler needs to rely on these three variables, his knowledge and instincts.

There are many types of gambling that includes casino games, table games like poker, blackjack, roulette etc. electronic gaming, sports betting, bingo, lottery, mahjong, etc. Risk is something that is always involved in gambling. No past gambles that were good can ever influence the future ones hence you are never sure of what’s going to happen. Many people believe that they are good in prediction or their luck favors them but most of these people don’t understand the odds and risks involved in gambling.
